The rupee maintained firm trend against the dollar on the money market on Wednesday in the process of trading activity, dealers said. The rupee gained slightly versus the dollar for buying and selling at Rs 156.28 and Rs 156.32 respectively, they said.

INTER-BANK MARKET RATES: OPEN MARKET RATES: The rupee was unchanged in relation the dollar for buying and selling at Rs 156.20 and Rs 156.70 respectively, they added. The rupee was also inert in terms of the euro for buying and selling at Rs 171.50 and Rs 173.50, they said.

In the third Asian trade, the dollar steadied on Wednesday as investors appetite for risk showed cautious improvement and the yen weakened in the shift away from safe havens, but currencies kept to tight ranges ahead of a series of major central bank meetings over the next week.

Investor focus for now is centred on the European Central Bank's meeting on Thursday. Expectations it will push interest rates even further into negative territory have weighed on the euro, which has shed 3% since June.

The dollar index was steady at 98.332.

The dollar was trading against the Indian rupee at Rs 71.713. The greenback was at 4.175 in terms of the Malaysian ringgit and the US currency was available at 7.112 versus the Chinese yuan.

RUPEE IN LAHORE: The Pak rupee witnessed divergent trend in process of trading against the American dollar in the local currency market on Wednesday.

Following fluctuating demand and supply situation in the market, the US dollar moved both ways and ended for buying and selling at Rs 156.20 and Rs 156.90 against the previous closing rate of Rs 156.25 and Rs 156.55 respectively, local currency dealers said.

Moreover, the local currency significantly declined its worth versus the pound sterling. The pound's buying and selling rates rose from the Saturday's closing of Rs 191.40 and Rs 192.50 to Rs 192.20 and Rs 193.00 respectively, they added.

RUPEE IN ISLAMABAD AND RAWALPINDI: The rupee gained 20 paisas against the dollar at the open currency markets of Islamabad and Rawalpindi here on Wednesday.

The dollar opened at Rs 156.80 (buying) and Rs 156.90 (selling) against last rate of Rs 157 (buying) and Rs 157.10 (selling).

It closed at Rs 156.80 (buying) and Rs 156.90 (selling).

The buying and selling rates of one tola of gold were Rs. 89,000 (selling) and Rs 88,500(buying) in the local Sarafa (gold) markets of Islamabad and Rawalpindi.
