The 'Vayu' has grown into a very severe cyclonic storm swirling further into northeastward from its origin in east Arabian Sea with a maximum wind speed between 145 kilometres and 160 kilometres an hour, the Met Office said on Wednesday.

The cyclone is now looming large some 725 kilometers southeast of Karachi coast that is likely to cause sea breeze cut-off to the metropolis and give rise to temperature up to 42 degrees Celsius between June 13 and June 15 and 80 percent humidity, the Met said.

"The influence of cyclone "Vayu" in East Arabian sea, sea breeze is likely to cut off during 13th-15th June 2019," the Met said, adding that the weather system may stir a moderate heat wave in the city. The Vayu is likely to continue to move into a northerly direction and may cause widespread thunderstorm with downpour and windstorm in Thatta, Badin and Tharparkar districts on Thursday and Friday.

Scattered and isolated dust-thundershowers are also expected in other parts of Sindh over the period, as the Met asked the fishermen stay anchored at the coasts until Friday evening with the storm dissipating. The sea is likely to remain very rough with high tides. The authorities concerned should remain alert and take precautionary measures in the next few days to deal with any untoward incidents in the aftermaths of Vayu.

"Tropical Cyclone "Vayu" in the East Arabian Sea has intensified as Very Severe Cyclonic Storm (VSCS) and moved further north-northwestward during last 6 hours, now lay centered around Lat.18.N and Long.70.0E... the maximum sustained surface winds are 135-145 km/hour gusting to 160 km/hour around the system centre," the Met said.

In the next 24 hours: Mainly a hot and dry weather is expected in the most parts of the country with very hot in eastern Balochistan and central and southern Punjab. Scattered dust-thundershower may hit southeastern Sindh Mirpurkhas, Hyderabad and Karachi Divisions.

"Continental air is prevailing over most parts of the country. A shallow westerly wave is affecting upper parts of the country and likely to move northeastward during next 12 hours," the Met said.

Maximum temperature over the past 24 hours was recorded in Sibbi and Larkana as 48 degrees Celsius, each, Jaccobabad 47, Dadu and Mohenjo-Daro 46, each, Hyderabad 43, Karachi and Lahore 40, each, Peshawar, Faisalabad and Multan 39, each, Islamabad 35, Quetta 34, Muzaffarabad 31 and Gilgit 21..

Astore received 62 mm of rainfall, Skardu 44mm, Chillas and Bagrote 22mm, each, Gilgit 20mm, Islamabad Saidpur 19mm, Rawalakot 17mm, Kakul 16mm, Pattan 15mm, Islamabad Zero Point, Muzaffarabad, Garidupatta, and Kotli 14mm, each, Balakot 13mm, Joharabad 12mm, M B Din 11mm, Murree 10mm, Malamjabba 9mm, Rawalpindi 8mm, Saidu Sharif 7mm, Chitral and Parachinar 6mm, each.
