The City Traffic Police (CTP) Lahore has asked the Punjab Transport Department to direct the ride hailing services Uber and Careem to display the word "Private Taxi" along with the logo of online private taxi companies on vehicles engaged in this business.

In a letter written to the secretary transport Punjab by Lahore Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Liaqat Ali Malik on Wednesday, the CTP has highlighted violations of traffic rules being committed by Uber and Careem. The letter, a copy of which is available with Business Recorder, says that according to Section-34 (sub-section-3) of the Motor Vehicle Rules 1969, "in case of a motor cab, or a motor cab rickshaw, the word "taxi" shall be painted in white in the middle of the windscreen as well as of the rear glass".

According to the rules, "the letters shall be not less than 2-1/2 inches high and 5/8th of an inch thick at any part. The word "private" in block letters not less than 2-1/4 inches high and 5/8th of an inch thick at any part shall be painted in red in the middle of the windscreen of a motorcycle rickshaw".
