The employees of Earthquake Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Authority (ERRA) while protesting against their termination from jobs Thursday warned the government to stage a sit-in if they are not restored. The employees said that the government has announced to merge the ERRA with National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and all the employees associated with ERRA, except 40, were asked not to come to office from Thursday (October 3). They said they had joined the organization since its creation following October 8, 2005 devastating earthquake on contractual basis.

In 2013, the government also took similar decision and decided to abolish the authority but the employees went to Islamabad High Court which decided in the favor of employees and asked the government to regularize the employees, but since then the authorities have been playing delaying tactics. The employees said that the government decision came at a time when the country is marking the 14th anniversary of the 2005 earthquake which killed almost 80,000 people across Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Islamabad Capital territory and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

However, the ERRA has announced to extend the contracts of its employees on the basis of merit. The authority has rejected the rumors pertaining to annulment of contractual employees' services, a press release said. The ERRA had neither issued any such list, nor had informed any employee working on contract about the termination of his/her service contract. However, extension in contract of some of the employees was halted due to lack of funds. The extension in the service contract of contractual and daily-wage employees would be made keeping in view their performance, education and merit.
