The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has tightened the noose around unregistered printing presses and other advertising businesses and issued notices to over 470 units for verification of national tax number; it was learnt here.

According to sources, the board has extended the scope of its broadening of tax base exercise to unregistered printing presses and other advertising businesses.

They said that printing presses, marriage card makers, sophisticated medicines and beverages material makers, who imported expensive machines, are earning substantial amount of revenue but their contribution to national exchequer do not commensurate with the earnings.

Keeping the said in view, the department has carried out physical survey and information collected from various sources revealed that a large number of printing presses are not enrolled in FBR system.

Replying to a question, sources said that Broadening of Tax Base (BTB) zone of RTO-II during physical examination identified over 470 presses only in Karachi, which were earning substantial revenue but remained unregistered or paying meager amount as tax. Furthermore sources said that the department had now started issuing notices to them for verification of national tax number.
