Amid tight security, the Shia community on Monday commemorated 9th of Muharram with religious zeal and reverence in Peshawar to pay homage to the sacrifices of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) and his companions in Karbala. However, the security measures adopted in the city and cantonment areas coupled with suspension of cellular phone services caused immense problems for the citizens.

The main procession of 9th Muharram was taken out from Imambargah Hussainia Hall, Peshawar Saddar on Monday morning.

In the afternoon, several processions appeared from different worship places in the city which led to closure of all the main arteries, including GT Road, Khyber Road, Sher Shah Suri Road and Saddar Road, while the bazaars and shopping malls remained closed. The mourning processions will be taken out from different Imambargah on 10th of Muharram (today) in Peshawar.

A big mourning procession was taken out from the main Imambargah Hussania located at Sadar road. The procession was participated by hundreds of Shia Muslims. Mourners performed self flageration and recited Nowah.

The procession started from the Hussania Hall and marched on different roads including the Fakhr-e-Alam Road, Tipu Sultan Road, Kalabari, Fowara Chowk and culminated at the Imambargah Hussainia from where it was started. The mourning procession was participated by men, women, children and Afghan refugees.

To cope with any untoward incident, heavy contingent of police were deployed on designated routes on which the mourning procession marched. Police forces were guarding each yard of distance.

Huge contingent of security personnel were also deputed on the roof of the buildings adjacent to the roads on which mourning procession marched near the Imambargah.

Before taking out the mourning procession, the Shia scholars highlighted the incident of Karbala.

On Tuesday, the Taazia and Zuljinnah processions will be brought out in the city.

The main procession will be taken out from Imambagah Kocha Agha Syed Ali Shah at Chari Koban. The mourning processions will also be taken out from other Imambargahs including Haji Rehman Malik at Mohallah Marvi, Kohati Gate, Imambargah of Tehkhana Gulbacha Jee, Imambargah Haider Shah near Jehangirpura and Imambargah Agha Syed Mir Fazal Shah at Mohallah Khudadad at Qissakhwani.
