Prime Minister Imran Khan has approved the name of Dr Mujtaba Paracha, an officer of Pakistan Administrative Service (PAS) as Pakistan's Mission Head to World Trade Organization (WTO), well informed sources told
Business Recorder. This position fell vacant following the exit of Mission Head, Dr Tauqeer Shah, a vibrant officer.
The post of Mission Head at WTO was created in 2002 to appoint a competent person to secure Pakistan's interests in the Doha round negotiations. Earlier, Foreign Office ambassadors used to represent Pakistan at the WTO.
On Jan 28, 2019, the Prime Minister Secretariat approved a selection criterion for the fourth Mission Head on a summary submitted by the Commerce Division. Accordingly, Commerce Division started the hiring process and ultimately a high level committee interviewed three names.
Commerce Division had sent a summary of three officers i.e. Mujtaba Paracha, Abdul Aziz and Fareena Mazahar and recommended the name of Paracha for the key slot. According to sources, as the Commerce Division receives approval of Prime Minister, Paracha will be formally notified as Mission Head WTO in Geneva.
