M&S was among the lowest-valued companies in the index's latest reshuffle, meaning that the retailer will drop into the second-tier FTSE 250.
The top tier that M&S is leaving features 100 businesses from across key sectors including retail, banking, pharmaceuticals, energy and telecoms. Marks has struggled for some time, resulting in it shutting more than 100 underperforming stores over four years to 2022.
