Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in the Sindh Assembly on Tuesday asked the government to ensure the availability of dog bite vaccines at hospitals, fearing the treatment to victims is poor. On a private members' day, PTI legislator Dr Seema Zia cast concerns over the dog bite accidents, as she tabled a resolution asking the government to make it sure the vaccines stockpiled at hospitals emergencies. Debating her move, she said dog bite victims are faced with vaccine shortage at hospitals.

Khurrum Sher Zaman Khan of the PTI also reminded the government of its pledge that it will step up efforts to stem the stray dogs reproduction through vaccines to the animals, saying that there has not been such a move seen to phase out them biologically. The city inhabits over 100,000 stray dogs that pose a threat to public and may grow rabies incidents. Speaker Sindh Assembly, Aga Siraj Khan Durrani recommended the stray dogs may be exported to China and Philippines.

Sindh Health Minister Dr Azra Pechuho said that the treatment to the dog bite victims is available at hospitals of Nawabshah and Thar and such other district hospitals. She did not rule out the possibility of vaccines unavailability. The minister told the house that the government has received reports of 59 dog bite victims so far, saying that the concerned department is working on a plan to stem the animals' reproduction biologically.

She urged the local government to step up to end the reproduction cycle of dogs as killing them is unsuitable. The house after discussing adopted the resolution of Dr Seema Zia unanimously. Earlier, Sindh Information Minister, Saeed Ghani told the legislature during questions and answers session that there are about 734 publications that include dailies, weeklies, fortnightlies monthlies and semi-yearlies.

The dailies are published in different languages that are 226 in Urdu, 49 in English, 134 in Sindhi, 3 in Gujarati and 1 in Balochi. However, he said, not all of them are published. He said the government plans to legislation on news media in consultation with the stakeholders including press clubs, journalists' unions and media owners.

The house also adopted an adjournment motion on growing law and order situation in the city and scheduled a discussion on the issue on Thursday. The house now stands adjourned till Wednesday afternoon at 2 pm.
