Prime Minister Imran Khan Friday chaired a meeting on Thar coal and was informed that 5,000MW electricity can be produced for the next five decades from Block-II of the coal reservoir. The Prime Minister was informed that work on first phase to use the Block-II of Thar coal has been completed while work on the second phase is in progress. Power plants are being established by using local coal reservoirs.

The meeting chaired by the Prime Minister was attended by minister for energy, the advisor to prime minister on commerce, special assistant to prime minister on energy and others. The Prime Minister was told that Thar coal was the seventh biggest coal reservoir of the world and it can produce, as per one estimate, one hundred thousand megawatts electricity for the next 200 years. Around 175 billion tonnes of coal, 50 billion tonnes of oil and two thousands trillion cusec feet gas reservoirs are estimated at Thar coal.

The Prime Minister was also briefed on projects of Sindh Engro Coal Mining Company as well as health, education, skill development and other projects for the people of Thar under Thar Foundation. The Prime Minister said Thar coal was an important asset of the country which was neglected in the past. He said the country''s energy requirements could be met by using Thar coal. The Prime Minister stated that the federal government would provide every possible help for provision of water, electricity and transportation facilities.
