Speakers at a seminar on Wednesday underscored the need for a strong intellectual property rights regime to promote and protect ideas by framing specific laws. They were speaking at a seminar organised in connection with World Intellectual Property Day by the Intellectual Property Organisation (IPO-Pakistan). The seminar was also addressed by Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry, Parliamentary Secretary for Commerce Shandana Gulzar Khan and representatives of Sialkot Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

In his address, Chaudhry assured the government's full support to IPO-Pakistan for the protection of IP rights and their enforcement as per the legal instruments available for making Pakistan an IP compliant economy.

He said that through the IPO the government is trying to motivate students and entrepreneurs to translate their ideas into products and services with a view to promote the culture of intellectual property rights in the country.

He pointed out that 47 universities and research institutes of the country have been linked with world IP community under the Technology Innovation Support Centres (TISC) programme with active support of the Higher Education Commission (HEC) and World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO).

Through effective liaison and IP awareness programmes, he said that a large number of sports goods manufacturing associations and chambers of commerce and industry are being attracted to encourage the culture of property rights in the country.

He said that the theme of this year's World IP Day "Reach for Gold - IP and Sports" is in fact recognition of growing contribution of sportsmen and sports goods manufacturers in innovation and creativity.

He said that the sports goods manufacturing industry is playing a key role in the country's economy and sending a good image of Pakistan abroad through producing world's best sports goods.

The minister also emphasised the need for introducing specific laws aimed at strict IP regime to ensure respect and protection of copyrights of the ideas. He said that broadcasting rights of the sports events are also very important and need to be ensured.

He said that advancement in science and technology and their growing commercial uses have created new kind of stakes in the form of IP rights and with growing awareness about these rights, a lot of interest has been generated amongst relevant stakeholders all over the world, including Pakistan.
