The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Monday filed a reference against Shahbaz Sharif and his son Hamza Shehbaz on charges of misuse of public money for construction of a drain for their sugar mills in Chiniot. The NAB asked the court to deal with the suspects Shahbaz Sharif, leader of Opposition in National Assembly, and his son Hamza Shahbaz, Leader of Opposition in Punjab Assembly, in accordance with law.

The reference submitted in the accountability court stated that both the suspects Shahbaz, being chief minister of Punjab, and Hamza with the abetment and connivance of each other caused the national exchequer loss to the tune of Rs213 million by committing the offence of misuse of authority, obtaining pecuniary advantage for themselves. It said the evidence established that the suspects fraudulently and dishonestly caused loss to the national exchequer and their offence fell under section 9 of the National Accountability Ordinance 1999.
