Renowned senior journalists Ashraf Khan and Ahmed Khan Malik of the Progressive Panel were elected president and general secretary, respectively, in the annual election of Karachi Union of Journalists held at Karachi Press Club, here on Saturday. As many as 360 members cast their votes in the KUJ annual election from 9 am until 5:15 pm.

The results announced by the Election Commission showed that all of the contestants hailing from the Progressive Panel swept the KUJ election for 2019, trouncing the contenders from Democrats Panel. Renowned journalist Ashraf Khan got 316 votes to serve the KUJ as president and popular journalist Ahmed Khan Malik secured 313 votes to become the general secretary. Naeem Khokhar received 287 votes and Qazi Asif Ali 263 votes to become the vice presidents. Muhammad Qaseem Saeed bagged 297 votes and Liaquat Ali Rana was polled 268 votes for the joint secretary posts. Muhammad Javed Qureshi with 295 votes became treasurer.

Those elected as members of Executive Council are: Younus Afridi secured 293 votes, Asif Shaikh, Aslam Shah and Nadira Mushtaq bagged 296 votes, each, Ghulam Qadir Zia 287 votes, Ibraheem Sualeh 277 and Shankar Lal 272 votes. Some 40 delegates of the Progressive Panel also made their way to the BDM for the PFUJ election.
