This metropolitan city faced yet another major power breakdown due to 'tripping' in the National Grid on Friday morning. Around 80 percent of the city neighbourhoods suffered hours-long power breakdown due to fault in KE transmission system. The KW&SB spokesman said that the Water Board's important pumping stations in Dhabeji, Gharo, Pipri, etc, had to remain shut for 3 hours due to the power disruption. Hence, the Water Board could not supply some 90 million gallon water to the city.

The most affected areas of the city were North Nazimabad, North Karachi, New Karachi, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Federal B Area, Malir, Bin Qasim, Korangi, Landhi, Gizri, Saddar, Garden, Lyari, etc. On the other hand, a KE spokesperson said the power supply to Karachi restored to routine level after parts of the city experienced an outage as a rollover effect of abrupt disconnection from the National Grid.

Despite abrupt disconnection of power from the national grid, KE's generation units landed safely in island mode ensuring earliest possible restoration of power to the affected areas. It is pertinent to note that strategic installations were restored on priority," spokesperson said, adding that K-Electric is currently receiving required supply from the National Grid. The KE sincerely regrets the inconvenience caused to its valued customers due to unforeseen circumstances and appreciates their cooperation. Reports had it the breakdown occurred after a circuit of the national grid between Dadu and Shikarpur tripped because of dense fog. The NTDC said that a 500KV line tripped which affected the power supply to Quetta, Karachi and various parts of Sindh.
