Steadier trend was seen on the money market on Wednesday as the rupee retained its present levels against the dollar in process of trading, dealers said. The rupee gained two paisas versus the dollar for buying and selling at Rs 138.89 and Rs 138.91 respectively, they said.

INTER-BANK MARKET RATES: OPEN MARKET RATES: The rupee retained overnight level in terms of the dollar for buying and selling at Rs 138.80 and Rs 139.20 respectively, they said. The rupee rose by 50 paisas versus the euro for buying and selling at Rs 157.50 and Rs 158.50 respectively, they said.

In the third Asian trade, the pound steadied on Wednesday but remained on the back foot following a volatile overnight session after British lawmakers defeated Prime Minister Theresa May's Brexit divorce deal by a crushing margin.

Parliament on Tuesday voted 432-202 against May's deal, the worst parliamentary defeat for a government in recent British history.

The dollar index against a basket of six major currencies was effectively unchanged at 96.017 after climbing almost 0.5 percent the previous day, when it brushed an 11-day high of 96.261.

The dollar was trading against the Indian rupee at Rs 71.053, the greenback was at 4.111 in terms of the Malaysian ringgit and the US currency was available at 6.767 versus the Chinese yuan.

RUPEE IN LAHORE: The Pak rupee showed strength as it appreciated worth against the American dollar in the local currency market on Wednesday.

Following lack of buyers' interest in the market, the US dollar gained 10 paisas and ended higher for buying and selling at Rs 138.40 and Rs 139.50 against the overnight closing trend of Rs 138.50 and Rs 139.60 respectively, local currency dealers said.

The local currency, however, depreciated by 30 paisas against the pound sterling and closed for buying at Rs 177.50 against the previous closing rate of Rs 177.20 whereas it firmly sustained its opening trend for selling at Rs 178.50, they added.

RUPEE IN ISLAMABAD AND RAWALPINDI: The rupee gained 5 paisa against the dollar at the open currency markets of Islamabad and Rawalpindi here on Wednesday.

The dollar opened at Rs 138.85(buying) and Rs 138.95 (selling) against last rate of Rs 138.90 (buying) and Rs 139 (selling). It closed at Rs 138.85 (buying) and Rs 138.95 (selling).

The buying and selling rates of one tola of gold was Rs 67,800(selling) and Rs 67,5000(buying) in the local Sarafa (gold) markets of Rawalpindi and Islamabad.
