The Supreme Court on Saturday directed the federal and provincial governments to pay compensation within a month to victims who suffered losses of lives and properties during protests following Asia Bibi's acquittal in a blasphemy case and submit a compliance report in court.

A bench headed by Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar was hearing a suo motu case regarding losses and damage to property during the three-day long countrywide sit-ins led by Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) after apex court had acquitted a Christian lady Asia Bibi. Earlier, the government official submitted a report pertaining to assessment of losses incurred during the protests.

The Chief Justice, however, asked Advocate General Punjab (AGP) to apprise the court as to how compensatory payments would be made to the victims. The AGP informed the court that "the federal cabinet has approved a compensation package amounting to Rs 262 million." The Chief Justice remarked: "Over two and half months have passed but a complete plan regarding compensation packages has not been submitted.

If the court hadn't ordered then this plan wouldn't have come either. The government had no plans to compensate the loss." A section officer of the ministry of interior then told the court: "We will make compensation payments this month."
