Veteran journalist, author and scholar Shaikh Aziz passed away at the age of 79, here on Sunday. His son Tariq Aziz said that Shaikh suffered a heart attack on the Super Highway near Nooriabad on Sunday morning. He was taken to Hyderabad for treatment. Due to lack of facilities, the family shifted him to Aga Khan University Hospital in Karachi, where an angioplasty was carried out.

After that his family met him and he talked to them but later in the day, his heart stopped beating and he died. Born in Hyderabad on December 9, 1938, Aziz received his early education in the city. Then, he acquired a diploma in journalism from the Thomson College of Journalism in London in 1968.

Septuagenarian Shaikh Aziz had worked at the daily Dawn since 1989 to 2008 and continued writing until this year. Prior to this, he worked at the Daily Hurriyat, Jang, Daily Sindh News, weekly Sindh Observer, the Daily Ibrat and the Daily Karwan.

He received the Taraqi Pasand Literary Award in 2001, and Diplace Excellence Award of Journalism in 2000. He had been elected president of the Hyderabad Press Club in 1963 and 1966 and president of Hyderabad Union of Journalists in 1974. He also served as a judge at the All Pakistan Newspaper Society since 1998 to 2004.

Shaikh Aziz had also authored a number of research papers and books, including Political History of Pakistan (Post-Independence Era), An Illustrated Historical Atlas of Soomra Kingdom of Sindh, Bhutto, Memoirs and Remembrances, A History of Sindhi Literature, and The Origin and Evolution of Sindhi Music. He also remained vice-chairman of the Sindh Adabi Board and it was his last professional appointment. Aziz's funeral prayers will be held after Zohar prayers at KDA Overseas Bungalows Block 17 Gulistan-e-Jauhar on Monday (today).
