Federal Ombudsman Syed Tahir Shahbaz chaired a meeting at Federal Ombudsman Office Karachi here on Thursday. The ombudsman said in the meeting that Chief Justice has taken notice on the miserable condition of jails and prisoners and ombudsman office has been ordered by the Supreme Court to supervise and submit a report within 2 months, said a statement issued here.

He said that there was an urgent need to resolve the problems being faced by the prisoners including shortage of funds, absence of vigilance, staff and oversight committees, provision of water, education and health facilities. "Prisoners are human they need to be facilitated according to the rules. There should be Prison Management System on Modem and Scientific basis to improve the conditions" he added.

Hafiz Ahsan Ahmed Khokhar, Senior Advisor (Law)/ Grievance Commissioner for Overseas Pakistanis briefed about the recommendations on prisons reforms and urged the provincial government to build jails in every district headquarters and separate portions for women and juvenile inmates.
