  • Comments Off on FIA mulling to register case against Haqqani: SC informed
The Supreme Court was informed on Tuesday that Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) is considering to register a case against Husain Haqqani, former ambassador of Pakistan to the United States. Additional Attorney General Waqar Rana submitted before the Supreme Court's three-judge bench that the FIA is considering to file an FIR against Haqqani on the basis of different offences, adding that agency has sought one week time to do the same.

Likewise, he submitted that the FIA has also written to the Interpol regarding the issuance of Haqqani's red warrant but the agency has raised certain queries. The FIA requires some time to fulfil its requirements, he added.

Rana also stated when the court hears this matter, Haqqani and his lobby get active against Pakistan. He requested the bench to hear the matter in his chamber.

The Chief Justice accepted the plea and asked AAG and petitioner to appear in his chamber today (Wednesday). He made it clear that no lobby will have an influence on them. He also questioned as to why the federal government did not proceed further against Haqqani in view of the commission's report which was submitted earlier. The Supreme Court on February 15 issued a warrant for the arrest of Husain Haqqani in the Memogate case.

A three-member SC bench, headed by Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar and comprising Justice Umar Ata Bandial and Justice Ijazul Ahsan, issued the orders while taking up the Memogate case. AAG Rana submitted a report suggesting ways of bringing Haqqani back to Pakistan. He said that American authorities have also been contacted in this regard.

FIA Director General Bashir Memon said, "A request has also been sent to Interpol regarding the issuance of the red warrant." Haqqani was implicated in the Memogate case when he allegedly had a memo delivered to Admiral Mike Mullen through Mansoor Ijaz.

The memo had offered greater government cooperation in return for the US backing against the powerful military in the immediate aftermath of the May 2 raid which led to the killing of Osama bin Laden. Earlier, Haqqani had dismissed reports of the Memogate case being reopened as a 'political gimmick' on part of the apex court.
