President Awami Muslim League (AML) Sheikh Rashid Ahmed on Wednesday filed an application with National Accountability Bureau (NAB) after his petition was rejected by Supreme Court of Pakistan in alleged corruption in liquefied natural gas (LNG) contract with Qatar. An official of NAB said that Rashid submitted his application before Chairman NAB former Justice Javed Iqbal at NAB headquarters. The NAB chairman assured Sheikh Rashid that he would look into this matter as per law, he added.

Supreme Court on February 12 rejected a petition of the AML president seeking disqualification of Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi for his alleged corruption in the award of an LNG import contract. The apex court observed that the matter does not fall under Article 184(3) of the Constitution. The court asked the counsel for the petitioner to approach the NAB for remedy.

Sheikh Rashid also filed a complaint against MNA Captain Muhammad Safdar (retd) in the NAB. He alleged that Safdar had taken Rs 9 billion from the cabinet division in the name of development fund in a non-transparent manner. In his complaint, he said that the finance department has refused to conduct an inquiry in this regard and the opposition leader in National Assembly had also written four letters to the cabinet division in this regard.

He said that it should be determined that where and how Rs 9 billion have been spent which was allegedly taken by Safdar from the cabinet division. He further asked which authority had given approval to release of such a huge amount. The NAB chairman has assured that he would take up this matter as per law.
