Each senator is elected for a six-year term though fifty percent of 104-member House members retire every three years and elections are held to fill their vacant seats. The polling for 52 seats will be held on March 3. According to ECP, four senators will be elected from Fata, 11 from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan each, and 12 each from Sindh and Punjab provinces. Islamabad will also elect two senators.
The vacated seats are filled through a system of proportional representation by means of the single transferable vote and this directly depends on the party positions in all four provincial assemblies and the National Assembly of Pakistan. Members of the National Assembly from Fata elect their senators, while four senators from Islamabad are elected by members of the whole National Assembly excluding members belonging to tribal areas.
