The meeting took place a day after the barbaric terrorist attack on a bus carrying Ismaili community members in which 46 people were killed near Karachi`s Safoora Chowrangi. Military spokesman Major-General Asim Bajwa stated that the meeting assessed the on-going operations against terrorists, and stressed upon intelligence agencies to assist in the exploitation of existing leads in all operations. The committee decided to continue across-the-board operation with increased tempo and apprehend criminals and their abettors regardless of political, religious, ethnic, sectarian or any other affiliations, including proscribed outfits.
The apex committee also agreed to develop a system for strict vigil at all entry and exit points of Karachi. There would help in effective policing and surveillance in vast suburbs of Karachi to prevent terrorist attacks. Besides, an intelligence sub-committee of the apex committee would co-ordinate and synergize civil-military intelligence efforts for optimally effective intelligence-based operations.
Other important decision made in the meeting included checking all financial channels funding to criminals, militants and terrorists. It was further decided there would be transparent and merit based appointment of various department officials with an oversight mechanism to help the system for long-term sustainability. Intelligence agencies were directed to work together to exploit existing leads to nab terrorists and criminals. It was also decided to hold regular and meaningful weekly meetings of the Apex Committee.
Similar decisions were made in earlier meetings of Apex Committee of Sindh held on April 16 under the chairmanship of Sindh Chief Minister. It was decided that an immediate ban would be enforced on public display of weapons in Karachi as well as rest of Sindh. Strict action will be taken against those breaking the enforced rule and a firm decision was also taken to launch a crackdown against the financers of terrorists in the province.
