Chief of Army Staff (CoAS), General Raheel Sharif Monday said that the Karachi operation would continue against all criminals irrespective of their ethnic, political, religious and sectarian background. Talking during the Provincial Apex Committee in Karachi, he said the operation should be carried out with transparency and sincerity of purpose.

The CoAS pointed out that Karachi plays a great role in the country's economy, adding peace in Karachi means prosperity for the entire country. He said that meaningful efforts were needed to ensure peace in the city, according to DG ISPR's tweet on social media. General Raheel Sharif said that the Rangers' operation in Karachi created an environment for sustained peace and stability.

He said that political consensus and a follow-up were a must to grab the space created for a lasting peace. He opined that political expediency could not generate apolitical response. Crimes should be dealt with as apolitical, he said and added, broad-based consensus and harmony were must to capitalise gains in the operation. He said that better co-ordination between Law Enforcement Agencies (LEAs) and the intelligence agencies was must. The CoAS expressed the need to empower the police as apolitical and effective force, adding, postings should be made without any interference through the Apex Committee.
