INTERBANK MARKET RATES: OPEN MARKET RATES: The rupee picked up 20 paisa versus the dollar for buying and selling at 97.80 and 98.00, they said. The rupee also inched up by 10 paisa versus the euro for buying at Rs 128.50 and Rs 129.50, they said.
In the third Asian trade, the yen slumped to a 20-month low against the US dollar and a 16-month trough versus the euro on Wednesday, after Shinzo Abe assumed office as Japan's new prime minister and reiterated his pledge to push for more drastic monetary and fiscal measures and tame the strong Japanese currency.
Meanwhile, the euro traded above $1.32 against the US dollar for a seventh straight session and in early New York trading was up slightly on the day. Traders said the euro's gain was due to position adjustment going into the end of the year, with investors continuing to reduce short bets on the currency. Interbank buy/sell rates for the taka against the dollar on Wednesday: 79.85-79.87 (79.90-80.00). Call Money Rates: 09.00-09.00 percent (previous 7.00-10.00 percent). The dollar was trading against the Indian rupee at Rs 54.96, the greenback was at 3.0690 versus the Malaysian ringgit and the US currency was at 6.234 in terms of the Chinese yuan.

RUPEE IN LAHORE: The national currency gained strength and was appreciated by 20-paisa on buying side at Rs 97.60 and 30-paisa on selling side at Rs 98.00 in relation to the greenback on the local currency market on Wednesday.
According to the currency dealers, the dollar was opened on a depressed note and remained under pressure due to lacking buyers' interest. On close of trading, the dollar was ended at Rs 97.60 and Rs 98.00 as its buying and selling rates against Rs 97.80 and Rs 98.30 of Monday.
Similarly, the rupee remained strong and was improved against the pound sterling. The pound was purchased and sold at Rs 157.50 and Rs 158.50 as compared to previous closing of Rs 158.00 and Rs 159.00, respectively, the dealers said.
RUPEE IN ISLAMABAD AND RAWALPINDI: The dollar-rupee parity remained unchanged on the open currency markets of Islamabad and Rawalpindi here on Wednesday.
The dollar resumed trading at Rs 98.50 and Rs 98.60 for buying and selling respectively against the same last rate. It did not observe further change in the evening session and closed at Rs 98.50 and Rs 98.60 for buying and selling.
Pound Sterling opened at Rs 158.50 for buying and Rs 158.60 for selling against same last rate. It did not observe further change in the second session and closed at Rs 158.50 for buying and Rs 158.60 for selling.
