Ministry of Water and Power has suspended electricity supply to the textile industry in Punjab for indefinite period. Over 80 percent of the textile industry is located in Punjab. There is no power supply to mills in Punjab for last 48 hours and there is no idea as when the ministry would restore power supply to textile mills.

The industry sources told Business Recorder that APTMA Punjab has convened an emergent general body meeting on Monday (today) at the APTMA Punjab office.

It may be noted that Federal Advisor to Prime Minister on Petroleum and Natural Resources Dr Asim Hussain had announced 4 hours a day gas supply to mills in Punjab to mitigate the impact of six hours a day power loadshedding during peak hours. But Ministry for Water and Power reacted immediately and notified for power supply suspension to textile mills in Punjab for indefinite period.

It may be noted that majority of power-reliant mills are already closed due to unprecedented loadshedding. The industry is likely to lose around $3 billion exports due to energy shortage.
