The Sensitive Price Index (SPI) inflation has gone up to 7.49 percent on the back of increase in the prices of wheat, wheat flour and eggs, according to Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS). Official figures released by the PBS show that weekly inflation is moving upward for the third consecutive week and the price of eggs per dozen is quite higher as compared to per kg chicken, suggesting thereby that the poor may no longer afford the chicken meat.

This may have been the reason for 0.05 percent increase in inflation for the high income group as compared to 0.04 percent increase for low income segment. The price of per dozen eggs jumped to Rs 131 from Rs 121 during the week, reflecting an increase of Rs 10. Another factor that contributed to the inflation was Re1 increase in the price of 10-kg wheat flour bag and more than Rs 2 rise in 10 kg wheat bag during the week.

Analysis of the data showed that increase in inflation was recorded 0.04 percent during the week for the income group bracketed in monthly earning of up to Rs 8000, followed by 0.03 percent for Rs 8001- 12000, 0.03 percent for Rs 12001- Rs 18000 and 0.03 percent for the income group bracketed in monthly earning of Rs 18001 to Rs 35000. An increase of 0.05 percent was noted during the week for people bracketed in monthly income of above Rs 35000.

Weekly inflation computed on prices of 53 essential commodities collected from 17 urban centers and released by the PBS stated that the prices of 11 items reflected an increase during the week, 13 showed a decreasing trend whereas the prices of 29 essential commodities remained stable during the week, but have increased considerably as compared to the same period of last year.

The price of per dozen egg hen (farm) increased to Rs 130.52 during the week from Rs 121.42, LPG (11kg cylinder) to Rs 1738.50 from Rs 1690.47, garlic per kg to Rs 125.31 from Rs 122.37, firewood 40kg to Rs 497.13 from Rs 490.12, bread plain medium size (340-400 gm.) to Rs 34.25 from Rs 33.90, bananas per dozen to Rs 54.32 from Rs 53.81, wheat 10 kg bag to Rs 306.99 from Rs 304.38, tomatoes per kg to Rs 40.04 from Rs 39.74, potatoes per kg to Rs 26.63 from Rs 26.54, wheat flour bag per 10 kg to Rs 343.32 from Rs 342.29 and gram pulse washed per kg to Rs 102.95 from Rs 102.66.

The prices of chicken live (farm) per kg was decreased to Rs 141.62 from Rs 146.59 during the week, sugar per kg to Rs 52.76 from Rs 53.47, red chili powder loose per kg Rs 250.17 from Rs 252.89, onions per kg to Rs 25.51 from Rs 25.76, gur per kg to Rs 73.41 from Rs 74.09, mash pulse washed per kg to Rs 132.03 from Rs 132.86, moong pulse washed per kg to Rs 111.49 from Rs 111.78, vegetable ghee loose per kg to Rs 158.45 from Rs 158.84, veg. ghee (tin) per 2.5kg to Rs 517.94 from Rs 519.12, masoor pulse washed per kg to Rs 97.06 from Rs 97.2, rice basmati broken per kg to Rs 68.34 from Rs 68.4 and mustard oil per kg to Rs 186.49 from Rs 186.61.
