National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) Director General Sindh Brigadier Jawed Iqbal Khan (Retd) on Wednesday announced that the authority would open an Executive Office at Korangi Association of Trade and Industry (Kati) to facilitate the business community.

In a meeting with the Kati members, he said that state-of-the-art Smart National ID Card (SNIC), launched by Nadra, was a third generation document having as many 36 security features. "The SNIC provides hi-tech solution and protection of identity of the holder. SNIC is much smarter than old Computerised National Identity Card (CNIC)," he added.

Giving further details, he said that these were chip-based identity cards; designed in such a way to fulfil all the needs of latest technology advancements and to store data. Smart cards will be directly connected to central database of Nadra. Holder of SNIC will have free facility of life insurance for two years. There are plans to associate many facilities with it eg biometrics, e-tag on motorway tolls, emergency relief in disasters, driving license, weapon license, passport, school card, health card and electronic voting.

It would also help access to cash disbursement programmes, branchless banking and financial transactions etc. There is also a provision of storing data of approved associates eg banks etc. Speaking on the occasion, Patron In-Chief Kati, S M Muneer, said that Nadra was the only government organisation that had maintained high standard of service.

Chairman KATI, Mohammad Zubair Chhaya, suggested that delivery of Nadra cards should be done through a courier service at the applicant's doorstep after verification of the address so that the issue of using fake address was eliminated. He also suggested Nadra to depute a liaison officer to assist Kati members. All Karachi Industrial Alliance President Mian Zahid Hussain said that over 200,000 people were working at KIA and it was a dire need to establish Nadra office at the industrial area. He suggested Nadra to approve a Kati's nominee to attest documents required for obtaining ID card.
