A Bangladesh court ordered police Tuesday to halt the long-running practice of parading detained suspects in front of journalists after a judge who is facing drugs charges was hauled before the media. The ruling at Dhaka's High Court was in response to a petition complaining of the treatment of Javed Imam, a judge who had to face a media scrum last week after allegedly being found in possession of a cache of drugs known as phensidyl.

"The high court has issued a ruling ordering police to stop producing suspects or arrested persons in any case before the media," deputy attorney general Amit Talukdar told AFP after the hearing. Bangladesh police regularly parade suspects before the media in advance of their trial - particularly in high-profile cases.
