The controversy over the construction of the Kalabagh Dam (KBD) has once again come in the open following the directive of the Lahore High Court (LHC), to the government to implement the 1991 and 1998 decisions of the Council of Common Interest (CCI), with regards to the construction of the dam on the merits of the mega project.

The cunningly orchestrated opposition to the construction of KBD comes mainly from the so-called provincial nationalists of Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK), with somewhat passive and lukewarm whining from political elements of Balochistan and assorted sundry vested interest, at large.

The fact of the matter is that the construction of the KBD is of paramount national importance, a national imperative, inevitable compulsion and necessity in the context of much needed relatively cheaper hydroelectric power, water conservation and management, flood control, irrigation of parched acreage, growth of agriculture and attainment of food autarky for the impoverished nation.

The opposition to the construction of KBD, is simply not based on merits, benefits and facts of the project, but solely on subjective, self-serving, exploitive and manipulative politics, spurred by rhetorical parochial jingoism, such as, "KBD will only be constructed on our dead bodies," ludicrously screams one of Sindh's ignorant provincial ministers, who knows nothing of the national imperative, necessity, technical aspects and related elements of the subject. One gets to hear similar rhetorical statements coming from the so - called nationalists of KPK, spearheaded by an absconding and ever absent political leadership, also joined in the vociferous chorus of 'No KBD at any cost' by the scavenging Shylocks in the coalition government. The rabid parochial elements opposing construction of KBD should know that that KBD is not only in the best national interest of the nation but, the smaller provinces would get most benefits, particularly, Sindh and Balochistan. The city of Nowshehra in KPK will not be sunk. The KAP will also reap the benefits of KBD, as part of federation!
