Members of a pro-Taliban clan in South Waziristan tribal district have fled their homes after eviction threats from a powerful tribe angered by a suicide attack last week targeting one of its leaders, a local official said Wednesday. The Ahmadzai Wazir tribe has blamed the pro-Taliban Mehsuds clan for a suicide attack on tribe leader Maulvi Nazir, who heads a militant group that signed a peace agreement with the Pakistani army but wages attacks on Nato forces in Afghanistan.
A local government official said some 550 families of the Mehsud clan have fled to safer areas. The Mehsuds have their own militant group, Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), which has denied involvement in the attack on Nazir.
