A three-judge bench led by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry resumed the hearing of identical petitions on the highly controversial operation. The court appointed senior judge of the Federal Shariat Court Justice Shahzado Shaikh to conduct the probe and submit a report within 45 days.
At the outset of hearing, the bench rejected Assistant Inspector General (AIG) Tahir Alam Khan's report relating to investigation on the operation in the both places, saying no progress was made so far. The court also directed the police to hand over all documents relating to the case to the one-man commission, which has been tasked to determine circumstances, and events including the reasons that led to Lal Masjid and Jamia Hafsa operation.
The questions also included: How many civilians and security personnel were killed in the operation? Were all the dead identified and bodies handed over to their loved ones? Were the victims' families paid the compensation pledged by the government? Was any legal action initiated against those who carried out the operation? With the available evidence, is it possible to identify those responsible for the casualties during the siege and the raid on the mosque?
