The Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation increased by 8.39 percent during July-November 2012-13 as compared to the same period of last year, according to Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS). Addressing a press conference here on Monday, PBS Secretary Sohail Ahmed said the downward trend in CPI inflation was witnessed in the month of November 2012 over October 2012 with 0.39 percent decline. However, a 6.39 percent increase in CPI was recorded in November 2012 over November 2011.

According to monthly inflation report released by the PBS, the Wholesale Price Index (WPI) also witnessed decrease of 0.36 percent in November 2012 over previous month while Sensitive Price Index (SPI) increased by 0.03 percent over October, 2012 respectively.

Analysis of the CPI data released by the PBS showed that prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages soared to 6.75 percent during July-November 2012-13 over the same period of last year, while prices of non-perishable food items recorded increase of 7.66 percent and perishable food items 1.75 percent, respectively. The cost of alcoholic beverages and tobacco increased by 17.97 percent during the period under review, clothing & footwear 15.03 percent, housing, water, electricity, gas and fuels 4.54 percent, furnishing & household equipment maintenance 16.52 percent, health 15.2 percent, transport 14.44 percent, communication 0.23 percent, recreation and culture 18.43 percent, education 9.89 percent, restaurant and hotels 10.28 percent while prices of miscellaneous items surged by 12.21 percent.

The items that witnessed significant rise in their prices during July-November 2012-13 over July-November 2011-12 include: pulse gram (46.94 percent), Besan (42.74 percent), textbooks (40.21 percent), motor vehicle tax (26.85 percent), household servant (26.6 percent), doctor fee (23.19 percent), utensils (21.46 percent), honey (21.28 percent), firewood whole (21.23 percent), and beans (20.49 percent).

PBS Secretary Sohail Ahmed said that trimmed core inflation had been observed as 8.8 percent during the month of November 2012 over November 2011, while it was 11.5 percent during November 2011 over November 2010. About the non-food and non-energy core inflation during the month of November-2012 over November-2011, he said it had been observed as 9.7 percent, adding it was 10.4 percent during November 2011 over November 2010.

Prices of food and non-food items which varied from previous month ie, November 2012 over October 2012 include: The price of chicken increased by 7.69 percent in November 2012 over October 2012, Tea (6.71 percent), eggs (6.49 percent), betal leaves & nuts (2.67 percent), honey (2.57 percent), jam tomato ketchup & pickles (2.35 percent), wheat (2.12 percent), dry fruits ( 1.79 percent), fish (1.35 percent ), beans (1.21 percent), wheat flour (1.11 percent) and milk fresh (1.06 percent).

The cost of woolen readymade garments increased by 5.05 percent during the period under review, firewood whole (2.25 percent), washing soaps & detergents (1.54 percent), household servant (1.49 percent), cleaning & laundry (1.43 percent), tailoring (1.38 percent), dupatta (1.32 percent) and hosiery (1.12 percent).

The main food and non-food items which showed increase in their prices during the month of November 2012 as compared to the same month of last year includes: pulse gram (44.30 percent), Besan (42.57 percent), eggs (24.7 percent), honey (23.6 percent), beans (20.81 percent), cigarettes (18.14 percent), milk powder (15.89 percent), gram whole (13.55 percent), rice (12.87 percent), milk fresh (11.81 percent), cooking oil (11.76 percent), and Nimco (10.96 percent).

The cost of textbooks increased by 39.99 percent during the period under review, motor vehicle tax (27.23 percent), woolen readymade garments (24.26 percent), MBBS doctors clinic fee (22.28 percent), kerosene oil (20.59 percent), firewood whole (20.06 percent), utensils (19.72 percent)), dupatta (19.38 percent) and cost of cleaning & laundry increased by 18.3 percent from corresponding month of previous year ie November-2012 over November-2011.
