Founders Group of the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry has advocated an early construction of Kalabagh Dam (KBD) saying that we have to build KBD if we want to avoid hunger, drought and poverty in the country. The Founders Group's leaders Mian Muhammad Ashraf and Iftikhar Ali Malik in their joint statement on Saturday said that who are opposing the Kalabagh Dam are hindering the progress and prosperity of the country.

They suggested that the government should constitute a team of experts belonging to public and private sectors to convince all the provinces on Kalabagh Dam issue. They said that civil society could also play an important role in creating a consensus as new large water reservoirs would benefit to every Pakistani. The capacity of existing dams to store water is constantly decreasing, thus the construction of KBD and other new dams are desperately needed to ensure adequate water for our future generations. As presently because of unavailability of dams, about 30 million acre feet of water is being wasted into the sea. The country's dependence on power generated through thermal sources is costing us way too much causing to face insurmountable challenges to remain competitive both in national and international markets, they added.
