SPECIAL REPORT: NUST Business School (NBS), a constituent college of national University of Sciences and Technology (NUST), which is characterised by number of distinguishing features

DISTINCTIVE FEATURES NUST was ranked amongst Top 400 universities of the World (overall) The Times Quacqarelli Symonds, (THE-QS), UK, 2009. NUST Business School was relocated to the new purpose built NUST campus in H-12, Islamabad in 2008. Since 2008, three new under graduate programs; BS Economics, BS Public Administration and BS Mass Communication have been successfully aunched.

Executive MBA program has attracted numerous enthusiastic working executives due to the flexible yet intellectually challenging design of the program. Recently launched MS Economics program has three streams catering to diverse student needs.

The first of the two NBS PhD graduates is now pursuing her post doctoral research, under Fulbright Program at university of Pennsylvania. NUST Business School now has a student-strength of more than 1100 students. NUST Business School provides opportunities for cutting-edge research and innovative learning.

ACADEMIC PROGRAMS Starting with only BBA and MBA programs in 1999, we now offer new undergraduate degrees in Economics, Public Administration, and Mass Communication. Executive MBA and MS Economics are new addition to our post-graduate programs. With the success of our undergraduate and following the launch of the PhD program in management sciences in 2002, NBS now has two PhD Graduates.

1 BBA (HONORS)In line with HEC and international requirements, our 4-year BBA (hons) program covers successful completion of 136 credit hours, 130 if which constitute course-work, and a research project worth 6 credit hours. Apart from pure management course, modules from the areas of Humanities and Social Sciences are also included to broaden the knowledge base of NBS students. BBA students undergo a 6-8 week internship to qualify for the degree. We currently offer two specialisation's at the BBA level; Finance and International Business & Marketing.

2 BS ECONOMICS This is a 4-year, 136-credit-hour full time program. The core course-work of the Economics undergraduate curriculum is designed to equip the students with the understanding of basic microeconomics, macroeconomics, economic growth and development, as well as the impact of fiscal and monetary policies. Students are able to build on this foundation through further study in upper level electives from a wide range of courses. The electives are carefully chosen to develop critical thinking, quantitative, and research skills of students.

3 BS PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION BS Public Administration at NBS is one of its kind, and is amongst the select few being offered in Pakistan. The 4-year, 133-credit-hour, full time program is designed to focus on the issues that have beset Pakistan in the public resource management, and aims at providing a feasible solution in terms of having a stream of public servants, who could lead the country towards good governance, development and sustainable progress.

4 BS MASS COMMUNICATION The newly launched 4-year full time undergraduate program at NBS, focuses on the study of social implications and responsibilities of the mass media, and in understanding of process of communication as well as fundamental knowledge of mass communication techniques and procedures. The department combines academic rigor and professional "hands-on" skills in all areas of communication, including television, film, radio, public relation, advertising and communication theory.

5 MBA Our MBA degree is a 2 year, 4-semester, 72-credit-hours, full time degree program. The coursework constitutes 66-credit-hours and a thesis worth 6 credit hours. In their final year of the degree, students opt to take courses from one of the five specialisation's offered: Finance & Investment, Human Resource Management, International Business & Marketing, Operations and Technology Management (OTM) and IT & E-commerce. As in the BBA program, a 6 credit-hour research thesis and a 6-8 week internship are essential components of the program.

6 EXECUTIVE MBA All Executive Education programs at NBS have three building blocks - Leadership, Teamwork and Creative Thinking. The Executive MBA was launched in 2009 and has participation from a diversified set of public and private sector leading organisations. The starting point of our Executive MBA is the faculty which has rich corporate experience and expertise to turn theories into solutions to real life business situations. Classes are held in the evenings on weekdays. Balanced teaching methodology of class room lectures, case studies and off campus assignments fosters an ideal learning environment where participants ideas and experiences are freely exchanged enhancing their leadership, teamwork and creative thinking skills.

7 MS ECONOMICS Designed for three different streams applicants according to their economics or non economics academic background, the post graduate degree can be completed with in one and a half to three year duration. The program provides not only thorough understanding of economics to its students, but also great flexibility and choice. MS Economics equips the student with professional training in modern economics, including tools and techniques of economic analysis, and relates the theoretical concepts with real world practices.

8 M PHIL LEADING TO PHD (Business Administration)NBS offers a course-based M Phil leading to PhD program in Business Administration to meet the challenges of the business world and the growing demand for well qualified and research-oriented teaching faculty in Pakistan. Most of the PhD faculty is either qualified from well-reputed international universities or have worked there as research fellows.

The first PhD of NBS, Dr Asma Hyder, is currently pursuing her post doctoral research at university of Pennsylvania, with Professor Jere R. Behrman. The second NBS PhD, Dr Hina Jawaid Kalyal, is presently working as a full time faculty member at the NBS Human Resource and Management department and is pursuing several research projects in addition to being the assistant editor of NUST Journal of Business and Economics.

Memorandum of Understanding: To formalise and enhance relationships with other institutions and industries, NBS has signed various Memorandum of Understandings (MoU). These MoUs are signed between NBS and the following institutions / organisations:

-- Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI)

-- Rawalpindi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (RCCI)

-- Pakistan Telecom Authority (PTA)

-- Pakistan Microfinance Network (PMN) Meezan Bank

The main purpose of this collaboration is to develop an agenda of relevant research areas of mutual interest. An associated interest is to equip the future Leadership cadre of Pakistan with theoretical training as well as practical experience. Consequently, under this collaboration institutions would provide data and expertise to NUST, reciprocally NUST would encourage its students to undertake research and internships in different areas as identified by respective institution.

SEMINARS AND TRAININGS NBS has been conducting various seminars and training sessions for industry from time to time. Some of the most notable events include:

NBS organised a thought provoking seminar on 'Pakistan's Geo-strategic Challenges and Response' first in a series of talks, to celebrate Pakistan Day. The purpose of this seminar was to renew hope in the younger generation about the ideology of Pakistan and to create awareness of the challenges being faced in the wake of emerging developments along nation borders. Seasoned intellectuals and political commentators, Senator Mushahid Hussain Syed and Ambassador Riaz Khokhar dilated at length about the geo-strategic challenges facing Pakistan.

The second seminar in the series, which dealt with issues related to 'Pakistan Internal Dynamics.' Invited speakers, former Information Minister, Mr Javed Jabber and Ex interior secretary, Syed Kamal Shah gave invigorating talks on the topic.

Lecture by Dr Khalid Malik, former UN resident co-ordinator in China, on "Why China has Grown So Fast For So Long". Dr Malik outlined that China had become a different country in just three decades and traditional economic theory was insufficient to explain this stellar growth and development. Speaking on the occasion, Mr Li Yeuk-Wang, President of China World Peace Foundation said that he was very encouraged by the prospects of a long-term partnership with NUST.

Lecture by Dr Akram Chowdry, a renowned entrepreneur and General Partner of Hi-Tech Venture Capital LP. At present, Dr Chowdry is actively pursuing establishment of technology venture fund in Pakistan and his visit gave the students and excellent opportunity to explore and present commercializable technology and projects.

A two weeks course on 'Modules of Human Resource Management, Leadership Skills and Decision Making', conducted by Mr Athar Hameed Butt, HoD HRM for police officers at NBS. The module was a part of the second Junior Command Course, a prerequisite for DSP to SP promotions of Punjab Police. The training has now been recommended to become a regular feature of the Punjab Police training calendar.

P&G UNIVERSITY CHALLENGE NBS recently played host to the second edition of Procter & Gamble (P&G) University Challenge, a challenging triathlon of events testing the mettle, skill and intellectual prowess of participating student teams from leading university of Pakistan. The three-day P&G University Challenge consisted of the University Champions league Football tournament, Battle of the Bands and the Business Launch Competition.

After a hotly contested match with FAST Lahore, GIKI emerged triumphant in the football tournament. Popular musical band Entity Paradigm (EP) was invited to judge the Battle of the Bands in which 10 university lineups showcased their diverse musical talents with the band from the Lahore School of Economics finally clinching the top place.

56 students teams from universities including NUST, LUMS, LSE, GIKI, UET, Bahria, Kinnaird, Air University, FAST, GC Lahore, MAJU, IQRA participated in the Business Launch Event. After two days of intense competition, the top 5 teams from NBS and LUMS, having successfully fended off their closest competitors, entered the final round. Country Manager, Customer and Business Development, HR Manager for Asia Pacific and Pakistan, Brand Manager Ariel and Brand Manager Safeguard judged the final round. The first place and a cash prize of Rs 50000 went to a team from NBS, making this a noteworthy consecutive win for the Business School in the P&G Business Launch Competition.

Much kudos also goes to a team of 65 student volunteers from the NUST Business School who used their superb management skills to ensure the smooth running of the P&G University Challenge competition and to make the event an enjoyable and productive one for all the participants.

Indeed, following the event, recognition of the efforts made by the NBS management and students was expressed in a special letter of appreciation by P&G HR Manager who noted that;

"NUST Business School was an obvious choice to host this event due to its standing in academic circles as a primary seat of learning. The level of commitment, support and hospitality we have received from NBS's administrative staff, faculty and students has been an overwhelming experience. Every arrangement was flawless, and the attention to detail put in by NBS team was exemplary. The passion and work ethic we observed in NBS students was truly unparalleled."

Omar Al-Ghamidi, the country HR Manager Saudi Arabia and Talent Practice Leader Arabian Peninsula and Pakistan of the Procter & Gamble (P&G) commended he extra-ordinary abilities and talent of the NBS students who won the competition with their well-propounded strategic planning and mesmerising presentation skills.

Events such as the P&G University Challenges create not only a challenging interactive learning experience for the students but also new ways for academia and industry to work together towards training future corporate leaders in tune with evolving industry needs.

EMPLOYABILITY At NBS, we prepare our graduates to face the challenges of both national and global markets and to compete as the best business graduates, in terms of both knowledge and exposure. The number of companies hiring NBS graduates and their satisfaction with the performance of our graduates is consistently growing. Continuing Priorities: Faculty Development With the concentrated efforts of the management, NBS has increased its regular faculty strength from 12 in 1999 to 40 in 2010. Majority of the faculty members hold degrees from well reputed international universities like The Johns Hopkins University, USA; Indiana University of Pennsylvania, USA; Kansas State University, USA; University of Warwick, UK; University of Luton, UK; University of Lincolnshire, UK; Thunderbird School of Global Management, USA; New Jersey Institute of Technology, USA; Loughborough University, UK; Hacettepe University, Turkey; University of Sheffield, UK; Goldern Gate University, USA; Middlesex University, UK; European University, Madrid Campus, Spain.

NBS faculty is encouraged and supported to become active researchers. As part of the faculty development program, NBS has been sending many of its faculty members to renowned academic and research conferences. In addition, in-house and out-house faculty training courses are featured in every academic calendar.

Centres of Excellence In view of growing number of students and their academic needs, NBS established two centres of excellence reserved for specific purposes of industrial liaison and executive education.

Centre for Industrial Linkages: CIL facilitates students with internships, job placements, and mentorship and serves as the point of contact between NBS and the industry. Annual job fairs had been a regular feature at NBS and CIL took it a step further by arranging a series of several placement sessions with some of the leading public and private sector employers of the country. The Centre has a comprehensive database of over 800 registered companies which is a very important resource for establishing and nurturing ties with students for their projects, training, grooming and employment possibilities.

CIL has also initiated a platform to keep the NBS alumni connected by hosting events aimed at development and a mutually rewarding relationship with the corporate sector. As a gesture of contributing to welfare of present student body of NBS, the alumni have established a special scholarship for deserving students to sponsor their education.

Centre for Executive Development Chiefly responsible for successfully launching the Executive MBA program at NBS, the Centre also aims to offer Diploma in Business Administration and professional certificates in various disciplines related to business management. The most important goal of the Centre is to design educational programs built around the philosophy of equipping students to meet the rigorous needs of their organisations.

NUST Public Policy Research Centre (NPPRC): A centre of excellence in its own right, NPPRC, is a constituent body of NBS. The Centre works for the progress and development of academic research at NBS. NPPRC is an independent research and education-cum-training centre engaged in conducting high quality theoretical and empirical research to shape public policy by integrating knowledge and methods across the management and social science disciplines.
