He is principal Warfare Officer by specialisation and has attended PWO course in the UK. He is a graduate of Turkish Staff College and did War Course from National Defence College Islamabad.
He has held various field command and staff appointments, notably the command of a Missile Boat, a Guided Missile Destroyer and Chief Staff Officer to Commander Pakistan Fleet.
At Naval Headquarters, his staff appointments include Director Naval Operations, Assistant Chief of Naval Staff (Operations) and Director General Naval Intelligence.
He has also served as Directing Staff at PN War College and NDC (War Wing).
