On the one hand, PTCL having the services of four Pakistan internationals in their line-up in goalkeeper Salman Akbar, right back Tariq Imran, midfielder Ghazanfar Ali and striker Shakeel Abbasi, dominated the proceedings in the first half but somehow or another could not translate that advantage into goals.
The PTCL forwards either sent the ball wide of the mark or were blunted by Pakistan Wapda's deep defenders Ghulam Murtaza and Rana Sajjad with deft clearances.
On the other hand, Wapda having had the assistance of four Pakistani stars in Olympians Mohammad Waseem, Rehan Butt and internationals Mudassar Ali Khan and Mohammad Shabbir just could not get out a maze.
Pakistan Wapda's forwards also proved to be goal shy and were easily relieved of the ball by PTCL's skipper Tariq Imran and Nadeem Iqbal once they managed to get into the danger zone.
PTCL earned their first penalty corner in the 18th minute but could not avail of the opportunity as the push flew over the stopper's stick and out into normal play.
Then after the change of ends, Pakistan Wapda began the game on an upbeat not and held sway for the initial 12 minutes. In that period of time, they were able to forge to a two-goal advantage.
Firstly, Zakirullah after a goal mouth tussle was able to slot the ball into citadel after beating a host of defenders. Secondly, left winger Rehan Butt hoodwinked two defenders and with an angular effort outwitted goalkeeper Salman Akbar.
PTCL doubly stung, then geared into spirited action and within a span of a minute were able to restore the skirmish onto an even keel. Zakirullah in the 53rd minute left unmarked from a right flank cross slammed the ball into the board with goalkeeper Amanullah left high and dry. A minute later, international Ghazanfar Ali was on target after a penalty corner drill. Then in the 56th minute Ghazanfar Ali with his side's third penalty corner award blasted the ball in to notch up his second goal and to send PTCL 3-2 ahead.
From that point onwards, PTCL held the raiding Pakistan Wapda forwards at bay.
Wapda in the 61st minute gained their second and last penalty corner but Olympian Waseem Ahmed's effort narrowly sailed passed the far post.
PTCL then resorted to possession hockey and succeeded in running the clock down, and that was that.
Earlier, in the third place play-off, National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) claimed the bronze medal by edging out Pakistan Army by two goals to one after both teams were locked nil-nil at the breather.
For NBP, Zahid Iqbal in the 43rd minute and Tariq Aziz in the 51st minute found the net while Army's consolation goal came through Mohammad Imran penalty stroke conversion in the 66th minute.
Tariq Kirmani, President of the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) and Chairman of Pakistan State Oil (PSO), was the chief guest on the occasion and gave away the trophies and medals at the conclusion.
