The Punjab University (PU) has decided to upgrade the Department of Pharmacy, Institute of Chemical Engineering and Technology and the Institute of Art and Design into constituent colleges.

Punjab University Vice-chancellor Arshad Mahmood chaired a meeting here on Wednesday, which was also attended by deans and heads of respective faculties and departments.

Chairman Department of Pharmacy Professor Dr Muhammad Jamshaid, Director, Institute of Chemical Engineering and Technology, Professor Dr Arif Butt and Director Institute of Art and Design Hasan Shahnawaz Zaidi gave presentations on the existing and proposed structure of their respective colleges.

Professor Dr Muhammad Jamshaid suggested constitution of a college committee, which would run the graduate, post-graduate, M.Phil and PhD programmes in the College of Pharmacy under the chairmanship of the vice-chancellor.

He also briefed the participants of meeting about the proposed departments, functions and duties of the chairpersons, academic committees, board of studies and proposals and requirements for the college.

About the proposed structure of the College of Engineering, Professor Dr Arif Butt said that in the first phase, the departments of chemical engineering, metallurgy and material engineering, quality and technology management, centre for coal technology and engineering research centre would offer various programmes in the college whereas departments of petroleum and gas engineering, polymer engineering and bio-chemical engineering would be set up in the second phase and the departments of electronic and communication engineering, environmental engineering and textile engineering would be set up in the third phase.

Hasan Shahnawaz Zaidi said the departments of textile, calligraphy, ceramics, film production and video production would be set up in the first phase in the college of art and design.

In the second phase, departments of music, architecture, interior design, furniture design, art history, art education and publications would be established.

Arshad Mahmood assured that the university would provide full financial and administrative support to the institutes for their up-gradation programmes. He directed the institutes' head to make arrangements for the inauguration of the colleges at the earliest.
