Pakistan Flour Mills Association (PFMA) has called upon the government to withdraw import duty on wheat to enable the flour milling industry to work to its capacity, export flour and make inroads again in the international market.

PFMA Central Chairman Asim Raza Ahmad claimed that ban slapped on the export of wheat and flour would eliminate the presence of Pakistan from the international flour market. It is resulting in gradual closure of the flour milling industry and stoppage to precious foreign exchange the industry was fetching by exporting wheat products.

In a statement issued here on Monday, Asim Raza Ahmad said that wheat stocks are in abundance in the country and there is no fear of any food crisis. He claimed that different departments have over 7.5 million tons of wheat stocks while it is also easily available in the open market. He said that highest release to the millers by the government godowns has never remained more than 5.5 million tons but the government had slapped a ban on wheat and wheat products exports apprehending wheat shortage.

He said that 1450 flour mills are situated in the country and many of those are linked with the export of wheat products. Ban on export had rendered them out of business. He demanded that the government should withdraw regulatory on import of wheat so these exporting mills could continue their business and maintain the presence of the country in the international market.

PFMA Chief said that it would help running the industry and create more job opportunities in line with the vision of Prime Minister Imran Khan.
