Yousuf Yaqoob, Chairman Pakistan Weaving Mills Association (PWMA), in a letter to Chairman NADRA has called for removal of a discrepancy regarding non-availability of 'Surname' in the CNIC while it is mentioned in passport.

He said that in many countries, the family name is placed before a person's given name, however, in Pakistan, NADRA doesn't follow the "Family" name paradigm and no one ever tried to address this issue. "We only find 'Surname' on our Pakistan passport and here is good way to know the word of Surname," he added.

The PWMA chairman further stated that as a matter of fact, whatever is your name, last name is to be written as Surname and similarly it's following on passport as well. "We have started to write our names in passports at least in this manner due to international requirements rather than telling everyone that there is no trend of family name in our country and we are just complying with the international requirements," he said.

Yousuf said that CNIC doesn't mention any 'Surname' similar to our passports. Hence, there is a conflict between both documents and this conflict causes a lot of harassment and problems in the foreign countries.

"Our passport is made as per the name mentioned in our CNIC, therefore, the name mentioned in the CNIC must commensurate and match with the name mentioned in the passport specifically and clearly mentioning the Surname & Given Name," he demanded.

He said that the documents which one gives for identity proof must have the same name ie. Surname & Given Name on both passport as well as CNIC and must match with each other.

As per the international standard, each person should have his or her name in three parts and the people who went abroad got knowledge to keep three parts of the names ie. first name, middle name and surname, he mentioned.

He, therefore, proposed that the addition of 'surname' be added in the CNICs similar to Pakistan Passports in order to remove the discrepancy between both the important documents of national identity.
