The recent deduction in the higher education fund would not have a good impact on the varsities as they would face many administration-related problems in coming days.

The public sector universities depends upon the grants release by the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan but as the funds have been reduced by the federal government it appears that research and academic activities and payment of salaries, pension and medical bills would be affected a lot, speakers expressed during a seminar held at the University of Karachi on Monday.

They urged for better teachers-students relationships and proper use of social media and internet and asked teachers to play their role in preventing negative use of social media. They also asked students to take good care of their physical and mental health.

The Students' Advisor Office, KU, and Inter University Consortium for Promotion of Social Sciences Pakistan (IUCPSS), jointly organised a seminar on "Best Practices for Peace Building at University Campuses" at the KU Vice Chancellor's Secretariat.

The Chairman Vice Chancellors' Committee, Vice Chancellor Quaid-e-Azam University (QAU), Professor Dr Muhammad Ali Shah was the chief guest while the KU VC Professor Dr Khalid Mahmood Iraqi presided the discussion whereas Muhammad Murtaza Noor, National Coordinator of the IUCPSS was also present along with VC Benazir Bhutto Shaheed University, Lyari, Professor Dr Akhtar Baloch, VC Hamdard University, Professor Dr Shabib ul Hassan, VC Iqra University, Professor Dr Wasim Qazi, Director Usman Institute of Technology, Dr Zahid Ali Syed, VC Sindh University, Professor Dr Fateh Muhammad Burfat, VC Jinnah Sindh Medical University, Professor Dr Tariq Rafi, VC Sindh Benazir Bhutto Dewan University Dr Aurangzeb Khan, Rector Dadabhoy Institute of Higher Education, Professor Muhammad Mukhtar, representatives of Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto University of Law and Newports Institute of Communications and Economics.

The chief guest VC QAU, Professor Dr M A Shah, said that faculty must back the administration and give full support to their vice chancellors as they have to perform very stressful job and do not have much support from elsewhere.

He said that liberal education is the need of the hour and having peace at campus is core responsibility of teachers, students, staff and administration. The teachers must teach students about negative impact of internet and social media. Professor Dr M A Shah further said that faculty could perform better with motivation and leadership of the vice chancellors and faculty and students' participation is essential for better environment at any campus.

The VC JSMU, Professor Dr Tariq Rafi, said that varsities reflect what is happening in the society and when there is violence in the society we will find violence in campuses. As the law and order situation is comparatively under control, we must work hard to resolve the deduction in grants to improve the conditions for students.
