King Edward Medical University (KEMU) has become the first public sector medical University, which launched the 'Emergency Medicine Program' in Pakistan. Senior consultants have been recruited for this purpose who are providing 24/7 healthcare service in accident and emergency department, Mayo Hospital, Lahore. These consultants supervise treatment of over 3000 patients per day. Emergency medicine has been established as independent specialty couple of decades ago.

The Accident and Emergency Department of Mayo Hospital organized first International Emergency Medicine Conference under the patronage of King Edward Medical University, Lahore. In view of special training requirements for this specialty, vice-chancellor KEMU Prof. Khalid Masud Gondal patronized the International Emergency Medicine Conference and Workshop. This was attended by international experts in Emergency Medicine from USA, UK, South Africa and Gulf countries who imparted their knowledge and experience to the junior doctors and paramedics.

Addressing the moot, the Punjab Minister for Health Prof. Dr. Yasmin Rashid said that the Punjab government is committed to provide free medicine and health care to needy patients.
