A meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Energy (CCoE) has directed the Petroleum Division to import more LNG and build furnace oil (FO) stock for the forthcoming months for power generation. A meeting of the CCoE presided over by Finance Minister Asad Umar also decided that Petroleum Division should go ahead with import of more LNG so as to utilize full LNG terminal capacity. The Petroleum Division was further directed for development of LNG infrastructure required to transport additional LNG from Port Qasim to transmission system. The meeting also directed the Petroleum Division to make necessary arrangements for export of FO after August this year.

The Power Division was directed to build furnace oil (FO) stock for the forthcoming months. Sources said that Power Division was directed to build furnace oil stocks for consumption in the coming months when electricity requirements would gradually increase. The reason sources cited was that the process of LNG import is required to be initiated now to have adequate gas for contributing towards generating 25,000MW power for the summer.

As the government may be required to import more LNG than existing capacity at Port Qasim to transport LNG from there to the system for power generation in summer, the Petroleum Division was directed for development of infrastructure needed to transport additional LNG from Port Qasim to the system.

Earlier, sources said, the secretary Power Division gave a detailed presentation to the meeting on the overall power supply and demand situation in the country and briefed the meeting about the drive undertaken by the Power Division for recoveries. He also apprised the meeting of the projected supply/demand of electricity for future and the fuel requirements for ample generation.
