The Russian Federation's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has honoured Pakistani politician Senator Sehar Kamran, presenting her "For Cooperation" award. Russian Consul General Dr. Aleksandr G. Khozin presented this award to Sehar Kamran at a ceremony held at the Consulate General, here on Friday.

Speaking on the occasion, the Russian Consul said that the current year is being celebrated as a year of 70th anniversary of establishment of diplomatic relations between Russia and Pakistan. He said that the embassy of Russia in Islamabad and Consulate General of Russia in Karachi have organized some important political and cultural events in this regard.

"The visit of Sergey Movchan, Vice-governor of St. Petersburg, to Karachi in April of 2018 was a significant historical event in developing modern relations between the two countries," Khozin said, adding that during his visit, the governments of Sindh and St. Petersburg signed an agreement on cooperation and roadmap to implement the agreement.

For several years and via every platform at her disposal, Senator Sehar Kamran has been actively working to promote and strengthen bilateral relations between Pakistan and the Russia Federation. As a senator, she has remained actively engaged with academicians, diplomats, experts, government officials to encourage 'Track-II' initiatives, as well as participated in numerous academics and cultural interactions.

Thanking Russian government, its Foreign Minister, Ambassador to Pakistan and its Consul General, Senator Sehar Kamran said that there is a tremendous amount of unexplored economic, trade, defence potential that needs to be capitalized for the benefit of two nations and larger regional well-being.

"The shifting strategic landscape of global and regional politics demand that both countries should enhance their bilateral and regional engagement for stability of the wider region," she said, suggesting that both countries' leaders should make their conscious efforts to reorient their foreign and defence policies to accommodate each other's regional and global concerns and find common grounds.

"There is no doubt that the two countries have much to offer each other, and not only in the short term," she said. However, in order to capitalize on the recent gains in the relationship, and to make it sustainable in the long run, a pragmatic, mature and multi-dimensional approach is required, with specified goals and objective, she said.

Pakistan, with its geo-strategic location and a population of over 200 million, offers great opportunities for connectivity, both within the region and beyond, she said, adding that the CPEC project is a milestone in this regard and holds the potential to transform the economic and trade map of the region. She said it also offers opportunities for investment and cooperation in sectors such as smart/safe cities, transportation and communication infrastructures, as well as special economic and free trade zones.
