The City Council on Tuesday approved a contract pertaining to charged parking fee collection from 27 locations of Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC). With the City Mayor Waseem Akhtar in chair, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) dominated council approved the resolution that was tabled by one of their fellow member with a majority vote.

It may be mentioned here that the one year contract of the charged parking fee collection was made on 13 February last. With passing another resolution, the council urged the Sindh Government to increase the Union Councils' (UC's) monthly funds from Rs 200,000 to Rs 600,000 so that the local bodies' councilors would resolve civic issues within their jurisdictions.

Unlike past, Waseem said that the amount of charged parking is now directly going to the Corporation's exchequer. He said that the summary for the increment of the UC's monthly fund would be moved to the provincial government for the approval.

The opposition members mainly belonging to Jamaat-e-Islami (JI), Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N), Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and others expressed strong anger and disenchantment over the City Mayor for 'not' providing them adequate funds for the resolution of the issues within their respective constituencies. They alleged that the mayor was not taking the stakeholders into confidence before making any major decision. They said that they are not given proper time in the council floor to express their point of view on the issues. The MQM-dominated council is used to passing resolutions regardless of opposition's concerns, they said.
