The Lahore High Court on Tuesday directed the Chief Secretary Punjab to ensure resumption of crushing by all sugar mills and payment of sugarcane to farmers on a price announced by the government and sought compliance report within 30 days. The court was hearing some identical petitions filed by Jamaat-e-Islami Punjab Ameer Maqsood Ahmad and others challenging closure of sugar mills' production during the crushing season.

The order of the court would not affect Chaudhry Sugar Mills, Haseeb Waqas Sugar Mills and Ittefaq Sugar Mills owned by close relatives of ruling Sharif family as they had been closed through a court order of the high court. The petitioners submitted that the sugar mills were not following the rules for the last two years and did not start crushing season this year. They said the closure of crushing had been causing a great loss to farmers. The petitioners asked the court to order the government authorities to take action against the delinquent sugar mills.
