US wheat futures rose 1.7 percent on Tuesday on concerns that a cold snap in the US Plains and Midwest will cause damage to dormant crops that are not protected by snow, traders said. The most-active CBOT soft red winter wheat contract notched its biggest daily gain since November 22.

A weak US dollar lent further support to wheat prices. CBOT March wheat broke through its 40-day and 50-day moving averages but failed to hold support above the high end of its 20-day Bollinger range.

The US Agriculture Department said weekly export inspections of wheat were 274,506 tonnes. Analysts estimates ranged from 300,000 to 600,000 tonnes.
