The Jamaat-e-Islami called off the sit-in against K-Electric on Tuesday after Sindh governor Muhammad Zubair gave assurances to the party he will look into complaints against the company within 15 days. The chief of the Jamaat in Karachi, Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman, announced that his party's calling off of the sit-in does not mean its campaign against the power company has come to an end.

The Jamaat-e-Islami reserves the right to re-launch the agitation if the governor failed to keep his words, he added. He referred to a charter of demands which also exposes what he called the level of corruption within K-Electric administration.

According to him, the company will have to pay back Rs 200 billion it received from consumers through inaccurate billing. He said that the KE administration is imposing load shedding despite the fact that the production capacity of the company is beyond the requirement. Consumers need around 2,300 megawatt, the Jamaat leader said, whereas K-Electric's production capacity plus the electricity made available to the company by IPPs and the federal government is nearly 3,093 megawatt.

He rejected the company's claim that it provides uninterrupted power supply to 61 percent of the areas Karachi. The consumer base of K-Electric is more than 2.6 million, he said, but it is not known how many people in Karachi receive round-the-clock power supply. Hafiz Naeem also charged K-Electric with practicing area-wise in load shedding in violation of the rules.
