Soon after accepting the resignation of top legal officer of the country Salman Aslam Butt on Monday, Prime Minster Mian Nawaz Sharif appointed Ashtar Ausaf as Attorney General for Pakistan (AGP). Reliable sources disclosed that Salman Aslam Butt tendered resignation to the Prime Minister on March 25 in the wake of serious differences with Federal Interior Minster Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan who was not pleased over a recent apex court verdict that had upheld Sindh High Court (SHC) decision in former army chief and president Pervez Musharraf's case.

The SHC had issued directives to the Interior Ministry for removal of Musharraf's name from the Exit Control List (ECL) on June 12, 2014 whereas on March 16, dismissing the federation's appeal in the matter, a 5-member larger bench led by Chief Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali had asked the government to lift a travel ban on him while he was awaiting trial under Article 6 in the country.
