The provincial government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has decided to constitute Primary Healthcare Committees (PHCs) for Basic Health Units (BHUs) and Rural Health Centre (RHCs) and Hospital Management Boards (HMBs) for Tehsil and District Headquarter Hospital (THQs/DHQs) of the province. The objective of the step is to maximum involvement community participation and ownership with the aim to ensuring efficient, uninterrupted and better healthcare service delivery in these health service delivery outlets.

The committees and boards will consist of concerned elected provincial assembly members, elected members of local bodies, local people of good repute and staff members of the health units. Work on the constitution of the proposed committees and boards are in final stages.

This was disclosed in a meeting held here on Wednesday with Provincial Senior Minister for Health, Shahram Tarakai in the chair. Secretary Health, Dr Jamal Yousuf, Director General (DG) Health, Pervez Kamal and other high-ups attended the meeting. The chair was given a detailed briefing on the composition, powers, role and various other aspects of the proposed committees and boards. It was informed that as per plan, Primary Healthcare Management Committees have been proposed for BHUs and RHCs while Hospital Management Boards have been proposed for THQs and DHQs with representation from elected MPAs of the constituency, elected members of local bodies, local community and the health department as well.
