Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Wednesday submitted a resolution in the National Assembly seeking creation of 20 new provinces on the basis of administrative control across the country. The resolution asked the government to take steps towards creating new provinces based on administrative control "in order to address grievances and to secure the interests of the people of Pakistan".

It suggested that boundaries and the names of the provinces should be ascertained by holding a referendum to elicit the opinion of the people of the region. While talking to Business Recorder, member of the National Assembly Sheikh Salahuddin of MQM said there is a dire need of creating new provinces on the basis of administrative control and with census of population in the country.

He said the population is growing rapidly and we should create more federating units to resolve the problems of the people and for good governance. He said the developed countries made progress in governance while resolving problems of people by creating smaller units. "If we create smaller units then it will be easy for us to address the problems of the people at grass root level as well as to deal with terrorism in the country. We can give appropriate names to new provinces with the consensus of the people," he said. Answering a question, he opined that the government needs to take steps to carry out population census for creating new provinces in the country. He said that population census is very essential to set goals in various sectors and to achieve them.
